A Rare Life-size Granite Sculpture of Guandi, Seated Leaning Slightly Backwards on a Rockwork Bench, Ming Dynasty [1368-1644] 15th C.,


a powerful figure, seated with legs apart & hands resting on his knees, the facial expression with bulging eyes & elongated ears and a furrowed brow with a broad nose, the upper chest has a remnant of a breastplate & a vestige of his armour, a cloak covering the armour. A scholar's scarf on his head with the ribbon down the back.
Note: The sculptor created a strong character with detailed contrasts, creating the illusion of different textures in the stone, all masterfully worked by hand, a representation of this much admired historical figure.
Provenance: Acquired in the New Territories, China in the mid 1990s
